Pranayama Level 1 and Level 2

This is an introductory pranayama practice where you will learn how to slow the breath down to bring a deep calm to the nervous system. It is an accessible, gentle, but highly effective practice, suitable for all levels. We will do eight different breathing patterns over the course of 40 minutes, followed by a short relaxation practice. Pranayama is essentially the science of quietening the mind and nervous system through various breathing practices. Sunday class can also be level 1 or level 2.

Ashtanga Yoga for a Healthy Back and Better Digestion

This class will guide you through a sequence of strengthening and stabilizing postures for your back and a modified Ashtanga Yoga practice with modified sun salutations, standing postures and up to the first seated asanas. There will be no upward-facing dogs in this class, only small backbends such as bhujangasana, the cobra pose. This is a great class for teachers who are looking for ways to help their students with back pain as well as those who currently suffer from back pain. This practice has also been used in research on irritable bowel syndrome.

Yoga Asana Sangraha:

Sangraha means “a collection” or “compendium.” These classes are grounding and calming sequences of postures which move from lying down, to standing, seated, inversions, backbends, stabilizing postures, twists, and pratyahara, in order to have an intentional effect on the signaling of the nervous system. The postures come from the larger Hatha Yoga tradition, but not from any one lineage. I have put these sequences together over the past couple of years of experimentation and exploration of Hatha Yoga practices and texts, and this class is reflective of how I currently practice asanas – after 5 years of practicing and teaching Sivananda Yoga (1987-1992), and then 30 years of Ashtanga Yoga (starting from 1992 till 2021).

Lectures:

The Yoga Sutras describe a journey through consciousness, giving guidance for how to manage our thoughts, stress, the problems that occur in our body, and how to develop positive relationships and interactions with the world we live in. Throughout this weekend, we will take time to travel through many of the important sutras of this text and discuss the subtleties of meaning and application to our lives. A big question that many of us ask when it comes to yoga is, how do I integrate these teachings into my day-to-day life? Over these three days, we will look very specifically into this question, and see what answers the sutras have for us. In our past workshops, we have delved a lot into scientific topics, and although our focus will be on Yoga Sutras this weekend, we will still be seeing how science and scientific findings support Yoga Sutra's suggestions for integrated living.
